Hagerstrom, 57, wakes up on a military base near
Ramadi, Iraq, puts on a body armor vest and helmet, and hops into a

Now that Al Qaeda has been driven back and the people
are reclaiming their city, women and girls wanting education, and especially
professional women for whom it has been especially dangerous, are returning
to classrooms. The problem is that, due to the looting, there are virtually
no textbooks for the approximately 1,200 women. I would like all of
us to create a ground-swell of support and tangible help to these brave
women. Please forward this to everyone you know hoping that organizations,
groups, individuals, churches, soccer teams, high schools clubs, …
will help with this effort. — Karen McKibben Morris, President,
AAUW Houston

Taking Charge 2008
(Date & Location TBA)
Sponsored by many organizations, including AAUW Houston,
Taking Charge is a one-day event for at-risk middle school girls. Taking
Charge empowers girls to develop their character, communication, and
leadership skills so that each may feel in charge of her future. Girls
who attend this event participate in empowering small group activities
and hear prominent and interesting female speakers.
To volunteer at Taking Charge, you do not need to have
any particular experience, but you must be female and over 18. To volunteer
please contact Pat Ross.
Naturalization Ceremonies & Voter Registration
From time to time, AAUW Houston Branch volunteers
assist the League of Women Voters with naturalization ceremonies,
in which immigrants become new citizens and register to vote.
Other voter registration events take place throughout
the year.
